The truth within the Fog ( 3 Free Chapters) Julian Mercer

The Fog

Kaya.

Just sixteen years old, tight against my side, her petite brown frame touching mine, my hands firmly planted on the wheel of Mom’s brand-spankin’ new 1974 Buick.

We are parked just down the street from her small suburban home.

An early evening mist shrouds the sidewalks and front lawns of the postwar tract surrounding us. The mist thickens, cloaking the street in a white blanket.

I’m smitten, I admit it.

Fuck, she’s the one for me! I want her.

Her eyes stare out through the glass, out into the gray.

Mine is fixed on her profile.

It’s not just that I want Kaya, it’s that I want her… and her alone.

It didn’t start out that way, but what does that matter?

This is what it became, what it is, and I will not be denied.

Finally, she moves, and her head turns.

Our faces touching, Kaya shouts, her voice filling the still small space:

“Okay, I won’t!”

“Okay, you won’t what?

“Say it!” I demand.

“Okay, I won’t see anyone else.

There I said it! Isn’t that what you wanted?” she sneers and turns away again, distracted.

Kaya concentrates on the fog, trembling.

It thickens with every passing moment, finally encasing the car.

Then she grabs the door handle. The door swings open without a sound as if greased by the fog.

She moves fast and smoothly.

In an instant, she’s over the curb and onto the dew-covered grass, gone into the mist.
